Dolomite Mountain Range, Italy

One of two natural sites added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in June 2009, the Dolomites mountain range in northern Italy features "spectacular landscapes," according to the organization.
Part of the Alps, the Dolomites reach a height of 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) and cover 1,400 square kilometers (350,000 acres).
They're the site of frequent landslides, floods, and avalanches, and also house an "excellent example" of a carbonate platform--a broad, flat expanse of the mineral carbonate, formed underwater. The platform, in this case, is also loaded with fossils.
